Mock Trial at UC Davis
About Us
How Collegiate Mock Trial Works
Every year the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) releases the case packet for the upcoming academic year, which contains witness affidavits/depositions, evidentiary exhibits, case law etc. Teams of 6 to 12 members, from universities all over the country, prepare both plaintiff/prosecution and defense cases to present at tournaments. Each team prepares three witnesses and three attorneys for each side. At tournaments, teams are paired with one another and present their cases just as real attorneys would at trial: opening and closing statements, direct examinations, cross examinations, even objections. Teams are scored by judges on how well they present their case within the structure of trial.
Our Program
We are one program made up of three teams: A, B, and C. The main season begins in Fall where we host auditions, invite new members to the team, and start working on the case. Each year begins with a Mock Trial refresher where the team learns about that year's case and prepare material for unstacked scrimmages. After this, the team is stacked into their respective teams where the real work begins! Teams work together to make their theories, draft examinations, and learn trial procedure. While we have an A, B, and C team, each team works together and helps each other out! Throughout the season, scrimmages are hosted to get students ready for our away-scrimmages across California. The team has traveled and competed in Los Angeles, Irvine, SLO, Fresno, Berkeley, Santa Barbara, and even locally in Davis.
